carlsbad
we made it to carlsbad cavern!! 750 feet below the surface-- and the "big room" has as much floor space as 14 football (americano) fields! it was a cool 55 degrees below and we spent a couple hours down there. then, at dusk, we sat at the cave entrance and watched as a colony of 250,000 mexican free-tail bats flew out for their night of insect-eating. they fly out in a counter-clockwise spiral because they're not strong enough to fly straight up-- so it looks like a bat tornado.
hiking with laura
laura (a friend from work), rich (her boyfriend), and i went on a camping trip to the guadalupe mountins-- about 2 hours east of el paso. the mountains are what's left of a 250 million year old coral reef and they jut out of the desert like a huge wall. guadalupe peak is the highest point in texas. very impressive.
