casa vides is one of 2 houses here in el paso that provide hospitality to migrants. one of my roommates works a shift there every friday and i have been going for dinner. i'm meeting amazing people with different migration stories. right now there is a large group of ethiopian asylees and an el salvadorean couple who are expecting a baby any day.

during my parents' 2 day visit, we somehow managed to find ourselves out in a clinic in one of the colonias of juarez and dad ended up doing a dental proceedure (and i assisted-- it was just like high school!). it was great to see them, and i was especially proud of them as they asked how they could make their skills available during their vacation.

after our hike, tess and i drove to the chain link fence that marks the border between mexico and the united states. i couldn't help but think back to a book i read a year ago... "The US- Mexican border es una herida abierta where the Third World grates against the first and bleeds. And before a scab forms it hemorrhages again, the lifeblood of two worlds merging to form a third country, a border culture."
--Anzaldua
i was standing on that herida abierta and i could feel the sharpness of the cut.
